Using bamboo sticks on a BBQ can be a bit risky, and it's generally not recommended. Bamboo sticks are often used for skewering food when grilling, but they have a few drawbacks that you should be aware of:
Burning and charring: Bamboo sticks can easily catch fire and burn, especially when exposed to direct flames on a BBQ. This can lead to the skewers disintegrating or even transferring an undesirable burnt taste to your food.
Splintering: Bamboo sticks can splinter when they become dry and brittle during the grilling process. This can pose a safety hazard, as splinters might end up in your food or cause injury when handling the skewers.
Limited heat resistance: Bamboo sticks are not designed to withstand high temperatures for extended periods. They might char or break down under the intense heat of the BBQ.
Instead of bamboo sticks, it's generally safer and more reliable to use metal skewers or wooden skewers that are specifically designed for grilling. Metal skewers are sturdy and reusable, while wooden skewers made from hardwood, like oak or hickory, tend to be more heat-resistant than bamboo.
If you still want to use bamboo sticks, consider soaking them in water for at least 30 minutes before using them on the BBQ. This will help reduce the risk of burning and splintering. However, even with soaking, there's still a chance of the issues mentioned above, so be cautious when grilling with bamboo skewers.
